aIA OMAHA CATEGORY III DESIGN CHALLENGE

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

2014

AIA Omaha announced the winners of the annual "AIA Omaha Category 3 Design Challenge – Presented by RDG" scholarships. The winners included Burke High School’s Brendan Larsen (1st Place; $1000; see picture attached); Creighton Prep’s team of Christopher Quinn, Matthew Wynegar, and William M. Dendinger III (2nd Place, $500/each); and, North High’s team of Brian Gilmore, Jacob Nielsen, Kyle Christensen, and Zachary Lundbert (3rd Place; $250/each). In addition, Burke High School received a $1,000 award for their team’s first place finish.

The judging took place on Saturday, April 25th at the OPS Teacher Administrative Center. Volunteers from AIA Omaha member firms and RDG Planning & Design served as judges for the student submissions. Each team spent two semesters working through the design process. The annual Design Challenge was open to all Omaha area high school students interested in learning more about careers in architecture, and also included a team from Bryan High School.

The Design Challenge student teams worked on the design a conceptual small live/work residential/commercial building at the northeast corner of N. 25th and Lake Streets in Omaha. Each student team analyzed the site, defined needs, developed the program, and generated design concepts. The Design Challenge helps participants learn to work in teams, develop critical and creative thinking skills, explore a design process, and improve visual literacy.
