2011 AIA OMAHA ARCHITECTS' HOME TOUR
Chad & Becky Wehrbein Residence
17701 Webster Boulevard Plattsmouth, NE AIA Omaha Architect: Jared Gerber, AIA With its clapboard siding, scissor-truss great room and gable porch entry, the Wehrbein Residence has a traditional feel. But a closer look reveals several modern nuances including unique light fixtures, uncluttered space and tall ceilings with clerestory windows. The blending of the two styles creates a simple, comfortable and livable home, which was the client’s goal for their rural site north of Plattsmouth. The floor plan was created for ease and function of everyday living. The living areas have a smaller footprint but feel spacious with the high ceilings and open floor plan. All of the rooms in the house are utilized, including the “getaway room” located in the tower and accessed by a secret staircase. |

Ron & Syndi Hackett Residence
3515 Oakridge Road Omaha, NE AIA Omaha Architect: Ron Hackett, AIA Tucked into the bluffs of the Missouri River, everything about the site is vertical, from the steep hills to the towering oaks, you find yourself continuously looking and moving upward. And the house is no different: it utilizes a small footprint, stacking spaces vertically to move you through the landscape. It engages and captures the site’s verticality while absorbing the forest environment. The home continuously connects you to the outdoors through large openings designed to frame and interact with the vertical timbers, utilizing the tree canopy for shade and privacy. First and foremost we wanted the house to bring the family together in a home that encouraged interaction and involvement with each other. And because the kitchen is the heart of the home, where family and guests are naturally drawn, it is in the center of the structure with all other spaces radiating from it. The open floor plan then connects all spaces both horizontally and vertically, allowing everyone to feel connected. |

Woolworth Residence
8459 Woolworth Avenue Omaha, NE AIA Omaha Architect: Steven Ginn, AIA The existing Woolworth kitchen was a long, narrow and cluttered space with dated 1950’s decoration. The client desired to utilize the existing space to create a clean, contemporary kitchen with a strong focal point and add a simple, organized home office. The design’s central focal point is a custom cast-in-situ concrete island, framed from above by laminated maple ceiling panels. The island retains the wood texture from its formwork and leans outward as it curves through the narrow space, allowing ease of use for the disabled. The routine act of boiling water was the inspiration for the ceiling panels, which were executed with a CNC three axis milling machine and finished with hours of hand-sanding. Black quartz and a custom-designed LED lighting panel that slowly cycles through a variety of colors highlight the central area. The kitchen also includes a custom operable handicapped ramp which is simple, manual, and direct so that it will be nearly maintenance free. The design and execution was achieved through the use of high-tech computer modeling and skilled craftsmen using age-old building techniques. The final result is a carefully-crafted and composed interior that meets the client’s demanding expectations to both celebrate and simplify the working side of the family home. |

Lakeside Residence
8841 Verdon Circle Plattsmouth, NE AIA Omaha Architect: Suzan Karrer Rohrig, AIA This lake home was originally built in the mid-80’s. In 2005, the home was renovated from top to bottom along with site improvements for the new owner’s active family of six. The house was transitioned into a crisply detailed, shingled style home with a nautical flair. Special attention was paid to the lake views but still able to create private spaces for the family. A special detail on the exterior is the use of cable rail for the deck railing, but to give it a look in keeping with the house design, big posts were used to create an interesting detail and yet along views of the lake. Also, the renovated boat house, new outdoor fire pit gathering area, sand volleyball area and newly landscaped outdoor spaces all enhance this already beautiful site. With fresh new interior spaces, luxurious master suite and quaint white kitchen the home has been transformed into a comfortable place to spend time relaxing. The home’s character is unique, reflecting its surroundings and those who call it home. |

Tim & Jonna Holland Residence
8810 Oakdale Court Plattsmouth, NE AIA Omaha Architect: Tim Holland, AIA The design is a reflection of the owner’s desire to create a contemporary retreat that takes full advantage of characteristics of the site: a steeply sloped bur oak savanna and quarry that was dammed to create a beautiful lake setting. The lines of the structure reflect the heavily treed site - 60’ curving glulam beams support 3x6 structural decking to create a wooden protective canopy above, a massive stone fireplace and stone accents evoke the former use of the site and all interior spaces were positioned to maximize views to the water. Interior finishes were chosen to radiate the essence of the site. The use of natural finishes, native colors and a leaf motif were incorporated into the finishes. The end result meets the primary objectives for the use of the space: comfortable, family-oriented entertaining and relaxation. |
